What Is G20?
First let us understand what is G20. G20 is a group of 20 such countries that represents 60% of the global population. These 20 countries account for 75% of world trade 85% of world GDP comes from these countries G20 consists of these countries at the moment. India is G20 President from December 2022 to November 2023. This presidency is rotated between members every year. G20 Summit 2023

Why Will 2023 Be So Crucial For India?
Let’s understand why the world felt the need for G20. Before the G20, there was another group which was called G7. They include all the developed countries But the Western powers only care for their interests. They understand only their economy But in a globalized world Things happening in one part of the world can impact things in other parts of the world. Let’s take the 2008 Financial crisis. Similarly, in 1997 There was a financial crisis in South East Asia This crisis began in Thailand and it spread across Asia. So in the year 1999 along with the G7 which still exists today the G20 was established Because the G7 countries realized that international co-operation was necessary But only after the 2008 financial crisis the leaders started taking this seriously After that world leaders started meeting seriously and started having productive discussions.
How does the G20 work?
G20 has 2 main tasks or tracks the financial track and sherpa track. If you have gone to the mountains there are Sherpas to guide you For the financial track, finance ministers & central bankers discuss policy like the ones on the screen. Diplomats discuss foreign policy in the Sherpa track like the points on screen. India’s plan for the G20 is to host over 200 meetings in the next year with participation from 32 sectors. India is the G20 President for this year And by virtue of being President our country enjoys certain powers For example, India can invite countries. G20 Summit 2023

With this one small move we can establish better international relations. India has invited UAE as a guest for G20 UAE is an important strategic partner for India Along with UAE

Global South includes countries that are still developing India’s PM said in the G20 Bali Summit that multilateral institutions are failing Institutions like UN, WHO, WTO give preference to the Global North or developed countries. India is in such a situation today
